the short stretches of rhythm guitar are for sure my favorite part. but I'm biased because I love rhythm guitar. I like the mood change when the drums pick up around 1:30. it stays consistent for a long portion of the song, but I don't think it ever gets boring. I think the feel falls apart at the slower section around 3:40. things get more cohesive around 4:00. the ending is kind of underwhelming compared to the rest of the song.

the bass sound is nice. i like the saxophone synth with a hundred billion gallons of reverb as a lead. all of the synths pile together really nicely. this entire song is honestly really solid. it's kind of a wall of sound, but you still have your drums cutting through. is the kick sidechained? i also like how the feeling of the song is similar all the way through but it stays varied.

StardustTunes responds:

Thank you for the kinds words! I don't know what sidechaining is, I just sort of mess with eq's until I like how it sounds and everything can be heard. Any advice you could give to help with that wall of sound problem?

the chorus is really cool. i like how the story attaches to the song because it feels so confused and in between emotions in the sus chords. the song is so hard to read, it's so unsure, and it feels lost. but I mean that in a way that contributes to the feel. it's cool

cribble responds:

Thanks mate, I was in a state when I made this I guess. It's difficult to remember that far back, but I was in-between places and a lot of uncertainty in my life. Not now, thankfully!

i don't really know how to feel about the intro. the bell sounds are really abrupt and sharp, but the pads are making a legato and relaxed sound. it certainly gives it a confusing tone. that might be desirable. strange choice to push it out of concert pitch, but i guess it doesn't really matter. i very much like the first time drums come in. the song does a good job of putting an image of my head that fits with the title. the beat is cool and choppy, which is beneficial for drums coming out of nowhere because it gives it a strong pulse with the harsh transients.

Midnights-Ocean responds:

Thanks for the feedback. So good to get honest reactions. Art in this day and age can be conformist, blending in with the rest, or it can push the boundaries of people's expectations/comfort zone. If I was going to be generic, I'd simply leave it to those who already create such things, as they do an amazing job without me.

the progression that the first half is clearly outlining with the arps is so menacing because of the suggestion of the diminished chord that the minor key changes is causing. the entire song uses non diatonic chords as part of the feel, so even thought it's not a harmonic sound that I like, I respect the feeling it gives off. 2:14 is great with the orchestral synths and how full it sounds. I don't like how 2:53 works as the height of the entire song because it feels unjustified with the build up before it. if it had gone from a smaller and smoother sound into that, I think I would have liked it more. in my opinion the synths are what do the most for the song

ty for the long review !! and for the constructive feedback ! and although I don't know much about music theory and I just kinda threw random notes into something I found that sounded pretty nice, and reminiscent of music I used to listen to, I can agree that it isn't really harmonic since I was more focused on the vibe and sound design, alongside unconventional sounds (ex: the formated leads, guitar like leads, and the use of orchestral elements). and I also can agree with the synths doing most of the work since that's what I was indeed going for and the orchestral elements sporting as textures and little bits to add, well, textures ! and although personally I found the build near the end pretty cool I can agree it's rather out the blue, and unjustified since I choose to cut it off so abrupt. (also that last chrous-y section was heavily inspired by the intro to invader zim if that gives any clarity as to why I choose something that harsh-like)

but still tysm for the time to review my track any feedback is well warranted ! <:D

the hi hat sounds great. the syncopated bass is nice. I think the melody is alright, some of the note choices over the chords aren't my favorite, but it does good enough. I like the orchestral stabs starting somewhere around 1:00. the way the hi hats come in and the mix fills out with more instruments with different patterns is fantastic, and I love the way it transitions into the B section. it does really great with creating and increasing energy over time.

the delay is really nice on the chords and the chord choice is cool. the chorus feels kind of empty considering how apparent it is trying to be, and the panning is messing with me there. i think the more relaxed part after the chorus is a little too long, but I don't know what the song is trying to achieve so maybe I'm wrong. the intro and outro are great though

interesting. I really like the changes, it keeps up the variation. the harmony is good. do you understand music theory? it definitely sounds like it. one recommendation I have is to make some of the samples more legato because the sustain level of the samples is much lower than the attack. the piano that comes in around 3:04 is nice, the fact that you keep the motif similar over the chord changes is really nice. good job

rherdalaezian responds:

I have played the piano for at least six years, and i have a decent knowledge of music theory.

I agree with your suggestion about sustaining some notes.
Awesome review, cheers!

good. I think the flanger or chorus or whatever effect is on the vocals is too in-your-face. the mix and panning are cool. if this is supposed to be a chorus or a climax part of the song, I think you should turn up your drums and potentially distort them or use more punchy samples

ORI-TAGGART responds:

Thank you for the feedback! It's much appreciated!

I make music; that's it.
